Avon Park, FL, USA: May 2013

Hello friends! Just wanted to let you all know I made it safe and sound to Avon Park, Florida where I will be visiting Shawna Laufer (The Rat Whisperer) and her family! We got in late as we spent all day at Rat Camp so we are all pooped! Time for bed! Talk to you all tomorrow!Day 1: What a neat surprise! This morning, as we left to go to Petco, we were greeted by the neighborhood family of Sandhill cranes. It consist of two adults and a juvenile. I was a little afraid, being a small rat and these being large birds, but I manage to gain the courage to have my photo taken with them as they moved away, on their daily walk from yard to yard so hopefully you can see them here in the photo.
Day 1: Went to Petco and looked at the ratties there. They were all females and all very cute (I thinks that little blonde hooded winked at me, that little flirt!)
Day 2: After breakfast, I helped soak some mung beans which are fed to Shawna's ratties. Mung bean sprouts are low in calories, have fiber and B vitamins, and deliver a boost of vitamins C and K and the rats love them! These ones have about two more days left of sprouting left before they will be enjoyed by the rats of Aquarius Mischief!

Day 3: Ugh! This rain! Fortunately we were able to visit Lake Olivia before the afternoon showers hit. More pictures to follow!
Day 3: Avon Park, Florida has soooo many orange tree groves! Unfortunately it appears they picked most of the oranges before we got a chance to go see them but we still got to admire the rows and rows of little trees!
Day 3: They call Florida the "Sunshine State" but so far all it's done is rain! I am looking forward to seeing Lake Olivia, the lake outside of Shawna's home when the weather clears up. Speaking of weather, keeping the people and pets of Oklahoma in our thoughts and prayers after the massive tornado they experienced yesterday.
Day 3: Met the girls of Aquarius Mischief- they were all over me! The boys were too shy to come out and meet me- they just looked at me sleepily from their hammocks. Oh wells, I can't blame them! Those fleece hammocks looked so cozy! I bet there are lots of rescue groups that could use some extra hammocks for their adoptable ratties- why not donate one today?
Day 3: Walked Shawna's kiddo to the bus stop. She is six but already an advocate for pet rats! She told me some kids have teased her for having pet rats, calling them "gross" but she has defending their honor, telling them how awesome rats are instead of letting their hurtful words upset her. She plans to take my photo to school on Friday and tell them all about The Traveling Rat, and what they do and of course about me and my travels!
Day 4: Did a bit of shopping with Shawna and her youngest, Kaylyn. Lots of hugs!
Day 5: Spent a lot of time today helping Shawna work on her blog (www.ratwhisperer.net). She is trying to get more rescue groups and rat vets added so that it is available to anyone who needs it. She plans on doing a post all about The Travelin' Rat and about me! Does this make me an Internet celebrity then?
Day 7: Joined Girl Scout Troop 13 at Heartland Horses & Handicapped in Sebring, Florida where they provide riding for those with disabilities. Some of their horses were rescues! The girls, as a community service project, cleaned stalls while learning about grooming, safety, and saddling. They also got to lead and ride the horses too!
Day 8: My time here in Avon Park is coming to an end so we took a lovely walk around Lake Olivia and watched the sunset in beautiful Florida
